Can I claim a rebate from Medicare?
Clients who have an approved Mental Health Care Plan are entitled to a rebate for approved sessions. Currently, individuals can claim for up to 10 sessions per calendar year under a Mental Health Care Plan issued by a referring doctor such as a GP.
Can I claim treatment fees from my health care fund?

Health Funds have different structures and covers available so it is advised that clients discuss their individual entitlements with their fund. Clients are able to obtain an invoice to present to their Health Fund to obtain a rebate following individual sessions.

Do I need a referral?
Individual’s can choose to come for an appointment without a referral. However, in order to obtain a Medicare Rebate individuals will require a Mental Health Care Plan from their GP or referring doctor.

For people under financial difficulties other programs may also be available such as the ATAPs program. This will need to be discussed further with your GP as a possible option.

How many consultations will I need?
The amount of consultations will depend on the presenting issue and background. In general, most people require 6 to 8 sessions. Some individuals may need only a few sessions, whilst others may require longer term support.
What can I expect on my first visit?
On your first visit you can expect your psychologist to identify what your primary concerns are and what you would like to gain from sessions. Your psychologist may also discuss aspects of your referral and your overall background information in order to better assess and understand your presenting issues and plan your treatment.
